Like any other public utility such as water, electricity, gas etc, money is essential for our modern society to function.
Public Money Australia has been created to address the issue that the system that creates, manages and monitors the money in the economy isn’t working for the majority of people in Australia.
Public Money Australia is one of a growing group of international organisations that are campaigning for changes to the system and to make sure that money is treated like a public utility that needs to serves the needs of the people.
Public Money Australia is aligned to many other causes such as tackling housing affordability, climate change, supporting small and medium size businesses and providing access to cash and other financial services to remote and disadvantaged groups. We don’t want to replicate the good work that groups campaigning for these topics are doing but want to tackle one of the root causes that affect many of these issues.
We see such a root cause in the way money is created, managed and monitored. Our campaigns and activities are aimed at tackling these causes through support of others or independent work to achieve sustainable change. We will measure our success by the extent to which public benefit is able to progressively displace private profit seeking by the banking system.
By sharing information and challenging the system we hope to bring about changes that can make money work for Australians.
The aims of the group are detailed in our manifesto.
